Potomac Laser Marking Capabilities

Potomac offers a comprehensive range of precision laser marking and laser engraving technologies, capable of creating clean, crisp marks onto products made from virtually any material. These include metals such as stainless steel, gold, aluminum, silver or platinum, as well as glass, organic polymers, plastics, ceramics, and even diamonds or gemstones.

Laser marks are also indelible, add no contamination from inks or solvents, and are difficult for counterfeiters to duplicate. Potomac’s unique capability to repeatably create spot sizes as small as 1 micron enables the direct marking of small products, such as medical devices and microelectronics components, eliminating the need for paper labels.

Laser Marking Across Demanding Applications and Industries

Potomac Photonics supports a broad range of laser marking applications where precision, permanence, and material compatibility are critical. From regulated medical and biotech environments to high-value consumer and defense products, our laser marking solutions are tailored to meet functional, aesthetic, and compliance requirements across diverse industries.

Our experience includes:

2D, BAR & QR Codes

Laser-Marked QR Code

The potential of 2D code formats is still expanding, with new applications emerging across manufacturing, traceability, and marketing. QR codes, in particular, make it easy to connect physical products or materials to digital information through a simple smartphone scan, linking directly to URLs, phone numbers, videos, or text-based content.

Potomac Photonics can laser mark QR codes, barcodes, and other 2D formats on virtually any substrate, enabling both internal tracking and external customer-facing use. Codes can be sized to meet space constraints, including Micro QR Codes, which carry smaller data volumes but are often sufficient for linking to web-based information or documentation.

Direct Scribing of Logos & Designs

Laser-Marked Logo on MonkeyFeet

Potomac’s precision laser marking technology uses a fast, direct-write process to produce clean, continuous lines rather than dot-based patterns. This approach is well suited for marking detailed graphics, smooth curves, and complex shapes such as logos, symbols, or non-Latin characters.

The example shown above features a micro-machined logo directly into a foam padding at a scale of only a few hundred microns. For customers already having parts fabricated by Potomac, laser marking of logos or designs can often be integrated efficiently into the manufacturing process, providing both functional and visual value.

Need Additional Microfabrication?

Potomac offers generous incentives to our customers that combine laser marking with our exhaustive list of other microfabrication processes.

Also From the Goodfellow Group

Laser marking performance is highly dependent on substrate composition and surface condition. Goodfellow supplies anodized aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, engineering polymers, and glass — the materials most commonly submitted for high-precision laser marking, 2D code engraving, and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Laser mark depth, surface chemistry after marking, and substrate material composition can be characterised through Goodfellow’s ISO 17025-accredited materials testing lab using SEM imaging and XPS surface analysis — supporting traceability validation and regulatory documentation for marked medical devices and aerospace components.
